There is a 32 bit instruction set, which can access about 16 general purpose registers, and a 16 bit 'Thumb' instruction set which are much more limited in capabilities (and most of the instructions can only access 1/2 the registers). Some of the processors only support the Thumb set ((like the Cortex M series), and some support both (and calls can change which set is currently being used). The instruction sets are very similar in many respects, and generally the 16 bit instructions can be mapped into the 32 bit set, with certain fields just getting default values. Things like in the 32 bit instruction set, virtually all the instructions can be made conditional, while the Thumb set only branches are conditional. There are also some significant generational differences between the various generations of ARM processors.
