It's not a problem. It's just a matter of measuring the distance and 
time separation between the events in some frame, combining them 
according to the rule, and giving a readout in square light-years, or 
whatever other square length measure seems appropriate.

The distance and time separations must be measured in the same inertial 
frame, but it doesn't matter which inertial frame is used, since the 
resulting space-time interval is the same in all cases. So it doesn't 
matter which observer does the measuring.
