I guess the obvious example is complex numbers.  The C++ philosophy that 
user defined types should behave as built in types enables Complex to be 
a class rather that having to update the language to add it (as C did).

I guess the fundamental glue is templates and operator overloading.  You 
can't mimic operator overloading in user code, but once it is part of 
the language you can build types that behave like built in ones.  With 
these tools it is relatively easy to build constructs such as 
associative arrays that need to be native in other languages.
