It very definitely matters. Whether or not an expression has a signed or unsigned type is determined the same way as in normal C expressions, but once that determination is made, all signed types are treated as if they had the same representation as intmax_t, and all unsigned types are treated as if they had the same representation as uintmax_t (6.10.1p4)
