Wir hatten mal einen Zeichensatz der ASCII hieß. ASCII ist der Code amerikanischer Fernschreiber und er belegt sieben Bit – der Zeichensatz war also auf 128 Zeichen begrenzt. Davon gehen diverse Steuerzeichen ab, so daß schlußendlich genau abgezählt die 96 Zeichen darstellbar waren, die man auch auf einer amerikanischen Reiseschreibmaschine tippen konnte (keine Umlaute, oder sowas). Anno 1981 kam der PC von IBM auf den Markt, mit der Codepage 437, und mit acht Bit gleich 256 möglichen Zeichen. Kleines Wunder: obgleich die CP-437 als „US-Amerikanisch“ deklariert war, enthielt sie doch die deutschen Sonderzeichen (äöüÄÖÜß), so daß man diesen Zeichensatz hierzulande unverändert übernehmen konnte. So, ich breche an dieser Stelle mal ab, sonst wird das noch’n Vortrach. Kommen wir also zu einem Zwischenergebnis: mit einem 8-Bit-Code sind, wenn man ihn ganz skrupellos belegt, ca. 220 Zeichen darstellbar. Wir müssen damit gar nicht erst nach China gehen, schon hier in Europa reicht das nicht! Statt dessen haben wir für jede Sprache einen eigenen Zeichensatz, nicht selten auf das allernötigste kastriert, und alle Zeichensätze sind zueinander nicht kompatibel. Dies zu ändern tut not! Und es wird geändert! Im Unicode sind erstens alle nationalen Zeichensätze der Erde in einem gemeinsamen Code enthalten (Zeichensatzkonvertierungen sind damit obsolet) und zweitens kann jeder Zeichensatz in seinem ganzen Umfang integriert werden. Das ist die Zukunft, alle anderen Zeichensätze werden peu à peu verschwinden. ⧹⧹⧸⧸_ Erika Cieśla
