Well, it's one of those double edged swords.

When you know an API in detail it makes things so much simpler.

However, the number and complexity of many of the APIs can make the learning curve so steep that it's seems impossible 
when you first look at it. The usability of an API is directly related to the quality of the documentation which comes 
with it, and the quality of the documentation varies enormously.
