When I first began object oriented programming my reaction was the same
as yours. What's the big deal, I thought. We've had structures in C
since the 1970's and records in COBOL maybe since the 50's.
But there's more to it than that. Once you start getting into
inheritance, sometimes multiple inheritance, polymorphism, "interfaces",
"abstract" classes, "virtual" classes, public private and protected
access, etc. you find that there really are some new programming
paradigms here.
If you pick up a book on Java, C++, C# or another OOP language, your
first reaction may still be, why is there all this exotic nomenclature
for things we could always do? But as you read on and start writing
code, I think you may find some very interesting stuff and some usefully
different ways to think about programming.
I suggest you approach it as an opportunity to learn something new and
interesting. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Alan
