On a conforming IMAP server, yes. On Gmail, no, they are moved to the
archive, the All Mail folder.

Not exactly. Thunderbird keeps a local copy in the cache. But this is
different from the structure that Thunderbird calls "Local Folders",
which is totally different from the cache copy. What you delete in the
"Local Folders" is totally independent of the server and viceversa.
