I think you missed the point.

Say the string was a file name, initialised to "some file with a long 
name" and you change it to "a short name".  What happens when you try 
and open the file?  If the length is unchanged, the name will now be "a 
short nameth a long name".

The correct option for modifying the string is to match the getter with 
a setter.  Now you can ensure the getter does not mutate the string and 
its return value can not be used to mutate the string.
