Hello, I've spoken about my slow database problems before, and I've been given the standard things to do, like compress/Repair, and create a new DB and copy everything into it, possibly culling out forms/reports that were not used any longer. That process turned into a real debacle, because 99% of the stuff that was in there was needed. We're constantly going back to the OLD database and importing more forms and reports and programs that we didn't think we needed, but were in fact still referenced by other programs/forms/etc. It's like the whole thing is one huge convoluted puzzle, that works, but it works very slowly!

I had resigned myself to the slowness of my computer, databases, or whatever it is. I'm talking here about slowness in switching between design and Report view, or Design and form view. It can take upwards of 20 seconds to switch from "view" to design, and many times, because of the time lag, my small brain will get thinking about what a nice day it is outside, or did I forget to lock the door or whatever, and I end up forgetting whatever it was I switched back to fix!

Something that DID occur to me was the fact that I tend to rely on global variables quite a bit. I'm talking about global declarations that are available to everything, form, report or VB program. For each of my global variables I also have a little program to expose the variable as a function, that way I can retrieve that value in the middle of a QBE or SQL statement for criteria, or ways to pass data to a query.

Is there any problem with Global Vaiables? Maybe even a LOT of them? Uhh, in this database it's -96- (wow, I didn't think it was that many!) seperate variables defined for global use. I'll admit I haven't been very judicious in my usage. A lot of it is laziness, not remembering, or documenting what a previous variable was for, so I just go and define another one.
