About a decade ago, someone gave me a DSLR, all of 1.6MP, he'd upgraded.
That thing took four AAs, and the batteries were done in a minute.

I was lucky, from another source I got a 2MP "point and shoot" which
worked out better, despite not being a DSLR. That camera used only 2
AAs, but I had to constanly remember to charge them if I was going to use
the camera.

But then about 2009 I got a new Canon, and generally I can at least get
some photos out of it before needing charging, even after months. But
then, I've switched to those Duracell precharged batteries, which at the
very least hold the charge much better. And I imagine the cameras
have gotten better at running at lower voltage, so you get more life that
way.

I bought a pair of FRS walkie talkies at a garage sale, no charger, for
five dollars. They were actually in with the toys. They actually come
with a pack of rechargeable batteries, but so organized that regular AAA
batteries can be used too. That seems like maybe the best solution.

I've yet to try them as walkie-talkies, I discovered they have the ability
to receive the weather stations at 162MHz, and these are realy good at
that. Beats the Weatherradio I had forty years ago from Radio Shack,
beats the windup Eton "emergency" radio I found a few years ago.
