I used to think that way myself - the versatility is hard to beat.
But I've found that most such cameras seem to demand every bit of
voltage AAs can put out, so they don't last long.  Even worse, the
slightly lower voltage of rechargeables mean that the camera can
barely work with them at all.

I too am tired of this never-ending stream of exotic batteries
which are only compatible with the camera du jour - but at least
they seem to be a better match electrically.
