Any decent distribution will give you the chance to partition the drive 
and format it as part of the install.  Or, once the install disc is 
booted, a limited subset of Linux utilities are there, including a tool 
for partitioning the disk and a tool to format it.

The only problem arises if you have something on the hard drive that you 
want to keep.  Then you likely have to go about it differently, using 
other tools that won't destroy the data but will make the existing 
partition(s) smaller so you have space for a Linux partition.
