My comment was about assuming a default extension when one is not supplied.

Most compilers, interpreters etc of any language, will usually insist on 
a file extension being provided. Even for a program intended to be used 
primarily in interactive mode.

So to run the Lua interpeter on prog.lua, you have to type:

     lua prog.lua

every single time. Same with Python. Same with almost any C compiler, 
even if it is capable of doing nothing else except process .c files.

What would be the big deal in being able to type this:

    cc prog

and it would assume prog.c?

Most of my programs make use of such default extensions except where 
there is no obvious default (like a text editor).

gcc appears to have a bit of an excuse in working for multiple 
languages, but even when it can only support C, you /still/ have to 
specify the language.

(I expect the reason is going to come down to some limitation of Unix, 
for example the following shows how extensions or lack of can be 
interpreted:

            Windows                  Unix

   prog.c   "prog.c"                 "prog.c"
   prog     Missing extension?       "prog"
   prog.    "prog" [no extension]    "prog."  [with trailing dot]

On Windows, the extension on 'prog' can be assumed to be left out, so 
one can be added, eg. "prog.c". Because an actual empty extension can be 
specified as "prog.".

Not so on Unix, where "prog" and "prog." are distinct file names. 
Result: a lot of people wasting a lot of time typing in patently obvious 
extension to files.)
