It might not just be Gnome 3 anymore... I don't know if this applies to all 
distros, but: when I had Debian 'Jessie' a installed briefly a few weeks ago, I 
discovered that parts of KDE 4.13 required udisks2 and therefore systemd. 
Hopefully it's just a Debian quirk, and won't be universal.
