That shouldn't be necessary ... but if you are doing that I hope you 
are performing an orderly shut-down of Android first.

It's not that just pulling the battery will necessarily break anything 
-- these things are designed to be fairly resilient, as people do drop 
phones and have the battery spring out -- just that if the phone hasn't 
been shut down properly when  the power is removed there are many 
things that just might go wrong.
