Consider the added problem of houses that all have names rather than 
numbers. Where I live now is a tiny hamlet of two farms and about 5 
cottages. No numbers have ever been allocated (as far as I know) by the 
Royal Mail - it's not a case of houses having numbers but people all using 
names in preference to numbers. Without a map that shows house names, you 
can't rely on finding one house with a prominent number and deducing where a 
neighbouring house will be because number 3 will probably be between 2 and 4 
etc.

We have to describe where our house is "isolated cottage next to a terrace 
of three cottages, half-way along the length of the village green", for 
deliveries - where it is possible to give this information. Amazon doesn't 
have any way of adding this sort of free-form info, so you have to rely on 
cottage name and hope that if they can't find our cottage, someone else will 
be in who can give precise directions. Fortunately our cottage is at the 
centre of the official map reference for its postcode (as used by satnavs 
when they are guiding people by postcode, which is the most common way of 
quickly defining a house address in the UK) so it gets delivery people to 
the right part of the village to start looking.

House numbering patterns are a mystery in some places. In general, a through 
road (as opposed to a dead end) tends to have even numbers on one side and 
equivalent odd numbers on the opposite side, so 1 and 2 are more or less 
opposite. Dead end roads (cul-de-sacs) tend to be numbered consecutively 
rather than alternate odd/even. But there are lots of exceptions to this, 
and some notorious streets with duplicated numbers, or else long streets 
which change their name half way along and start the numbering all over 
again. My parents live on a long road which runs for about 5 miles between 
two towns Aylesbury (the larger of the two) and Wendover (the smaller). 
Originally there were gaps and empty fields between the outskirts of one 
town, the intervening village and the outskirts of the other town, but now 
this is gradually getting filled in. You have three sets of house numbers:

- Aylesbury Road, Wendover
- Wendover Road, Weston Turville or Wendover Road, Stoke Mandeville (*)
- Wendover Road, Aylesbury


(*) Same numbering scheme, but boundary between two villages notionally runs 
down the middle of the road, so village name indicates which side of the 
main road: clever!

My parents went through a phase of mail for their house in Wendover Road, 
Weston Turville being mis-directed to the same number house in Wendover 
Road, Aylesbury, and vice versa - until a new postman had learned the rules. 
It doesn't help that their house number is has an "A" suffix (eg 123A) 
because it was built at a later date and was inserted in a plot of land that 
had previously belonged to 123 or 125 on one side or the other of it 
(fictitious numbers used). I suppose when only isolated new houses are built 
after the numbering has been set in stone, it's easier to add "A" and "B" 
suffixes to an existing number rather than to renumber the whole street 
consecutively all over again: as happened to my grandparents twice during 
the time they lived in one house, and more and more of the roadside fields 
were filled in with new developments.

Sometimes you find that a new development is given its own road name, even 
though the houses still front onto a longer street, so you get adjacent 
houses numbered 1, 3, 5 Old Street, then 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 New Street, then 7, 
9, 11, ... Old Street. That happened where we used to live: a large mansion 
had been demolished and five houses built on the land, with new driveways 
been built from the road to each of the new houses. Rather than renumber the 
whole street, they gave the new houses a related but different name (X 
Gardens, when the rest of the road was X Road).
