I've heard/seen reports of some villages which have put up signs, saying
SATNAVS HAVE THIS ROUTE WRONG or similar. Though of course they're not
that effective, as anyone following their satnav is probably ignoring
any signs with just text on them.

That _might_ explain http://255soft.uk/SatNav/ - that clearly had in the
SatNav's map a road, which followed very precisely - all the twists and
turns - an almost-invisible track, eventually getting to a little dip
where trees had obviously been growing for many years, to the extent
that most 4WDs wouldn't get through, though a Hummer might.
Probably less so now updates and live are commoner, but I think there
were places where local farmers - or others with suitable tractor-like
vehicles - made a small amount from pulling out people who'd got stuck
following blindly. (I think there were a few more serious cases where it
led people over a cliff or similar, or would have; I _hope_ most of
those have been fenced off by now.)

I have an old SatNav, which I haven't bothered updating as I know the
relevant part of the A1 almost blindfold. Either the bit you're
referring to, or a bit further north - a long section on the way to
Newcastle, anyway - the present road is I think some tens or more yards
to the side of where it used to be; the SatNav (which I tend to leave
on) gets very confused, as it thinks I'm ploughing through fields
parallel to where it thinks the road is, and is constantly trying to
correct me.
