I'd be willing to guess that my network experience goes back at least a decade before your first class in cs 101. /etc/hosts files worked in 1990 then as now, we just have to get the dhcp crap out of the way. And you and your insistence on using dhcp which has never given me a stable address are definitely NOT helping.
