For systems programming, which very often will be dedicated code for a 
specific target, then you need to be confident of such details. You 
can't have a 'char' which might be signed, or might be 8 bits, or might 
be twos-complement, or might have padding bits.

For applications programming, you might have a point. But bear in mind 
that in 1990, if you were doing graphics applications on a PC for 
example, there was no help from the OS (ie. MS-DOS, as no one used 
Windows yet).

So you had to write your own hardware-specific drivers, even for user 
apps. And you needed a language that wasn't so cagey about how wide even 
an 'int' was.

Here's a public domain C compiler I made earlier (by adding a comment to 
that effect):

Except it's not a very good one, and runs under Windows, requires 
msvcrt.dll (C runtime, which is part of Windows), and converts .c files 
to .exe.

Since msvcrt.dll is closed source, it would reqire an external PD C library.

I don't get why, on this desert island, you have a fully working PC, but 
don't have a copy of Windows or Linux to run on it and at least get started.

Will the PC at least have a BIOS or boot-loader? If so, why do you allow 
that code, but not OS code?

What would your starting point be? Presumably enough has to be working 
for you to load gcc and source code for a program off a disk, but 
surely, if you can do that (also using a keyword and display), then you 
have most of a file OS already working.

So I don't get it. If the idea is to start from absolutely no software, 
then a PC by itself is not enough, because it doesn't for example have 
front panel switches and lights to key in machine code.
