That is clearly not the norm. Hope you are OK now. Most antibiotics are for 5 or 10 days, at least from what I have seen. I had my appendix taken out 2 weeks ago and they did not even send me home with antibiotics, but did give me some during the operation (was home by that night). Just came back from having staples removed - healing well.
