You were not wrong. Basically the only reliable test is to use
it for a few months and see whether it fails or starts to
develop excessive bad sectors.

You can run a long SMART selftest, but even if that does not
show damage, you cannot be sure. Mechanically damaged drives
can stay without symptoms for months.
