Depends on what you're doing.  I needed to sort output from the
Windows function EnumProcesses() today, which returns a list of
running processes all of which are identified by their process id.
That list needed to be sorted to generate a list of processes in
a standard order to run through a diff processor to see what
changes before and after various things launch.

Sorting databases on key fields (32-bit integers) requires parsing
through the database and generating lists of keys (for each field
being indexed in that way), sorting the keys, and generating the
indexes.  This requires an 8-byte structure (key field + record
number), but it's sorted based only on the first 4 bytes, so using
a standard function would work.

I often use qsort() for that as well.

That's why I was thinking the C Standard Library may provide that
kind of support built-in.  They are fairly trivial to create, but
by not having in the C Standard Library, every developer needing
them must create them.
