It's not a vital feature since it does stuff that can straightforwardly also be done with named functions. But there are lots of use cases for it where it makes things come out cleaner. C++ might benefit more from it than Forth would, since C++'s heavyweight syntax makes the cognitive burden of another named function worse than it is in Forth. The situations where you actually want full-blown closures can usually also be handled with OOP, which is built into C++ and which has been implemented many times in Forth using standard primitives.
