A system that has been working now experiences video issues. There are
two hard disks on the system (Wheezy and Jessie).

When I boot the Wheezy system, I get a hung Verifying DMA Pool Data ...
This can have several causes. To eliminate the possibility the Wheezy
system is missing MBR or has corrupted GRUB config, I booted the Wheezy
disk from the Jessie GRUB and purged/reinstalled GRUB2 on the Wheezy
disk. This did not solve the problem.

Whether I boot the Jessie or the Wheezy system with Jessie's GRUB,
as long as I stay in at the console without starting X, no problem.

When I startx for Jessie, my display is VGA. I tried to add
"video=VGA-1:d" as kernel option when booting it, but this had no
effect. After about ten minutes running X on Jessie, I get screen
freeze: mouse pointer moves, but no keyboard input and no mouse button
input.

When I startx for Wheezie, things seem OK at first, but after perhaps
fifteen minutes, corruption starts in. Red or green lines or dot groups
appear and the display freezes. Mouse pointer (with its attached green
dots) an move, but there is no keyboard or mouse button input.

Some people resolve problems like this by flashing BIOS, but if my BIOS
has served me well for some years, I don't see any reason to upgrade it.
Other possibilities are video card or motherboard problem.

The video card is an antique: MSI NX 8500GT, 256 Mb, 128 bit, PCI X-16.
I don't have any single slot cards I can swap in, but if it looks like
the card is the culprit, I could purchase one to swap in to see what
happens. But it would be nice to know of clues that it indeed is the likely
problem. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX.
