I'd never have managed to write the code in the time available (and this is nothing to do with bad planning - sometimes there are external factors that mean that there was no need for some software yesterday and there is /now/) if I'd had to start on the raw application layer and build my own "nicer" library. I'm not even sure I had documentation or appropriate header files for the native interface. Some of that, as implied, was for myself.
