I could live with another not entirely unrelated use for the dot. Anyway, syntax aside, any major overhaul of C should probably do something to split up the single external name space. C programmers learn name discipline, but even so, it gets clumsy. However, I don't think that any change to C that is not largely backwards compatible stands much chance. Where you don't need C, there are lots of fine languages to chooses from, and where you do, well, you need C. There may be a niche for a language with tidied-up syntax but which is otherwise compatible in terms of function calling, data layout and so on (and I've not check to see if C2 is such a language) but I am not sure how big that niche is. That's a reasonable thing to do since you can't have run-time functions as anything but a thing pointed to, but it does remove a feature I sometimes use -- declaring a name using a typedef's function type. -- Ben.
