Why do say such things? The fact that something does not work in all cases does not mean that we must throw it out. You often make these hyperbolic remarks and I've commented before that it's more polemic than technical discussion. No one is suggesting we throw them out! Random access functions are very useful, but they don't work in all situation. They can even be used to determine the size of a file, but that does not work in all situations either. If a program uses them on its input stream, that limits the kind of input stream it can handle. Sometimes that matters and sometimes it doesn't. I don't see anything problematic or controversial and these facts, but pointing them out seems to irritate you. <snip> -- Ben.
