The pattern

  fwrite(&afloat, sizeof afloat, 1, fp);
  fwrite(&anint, sizeof anint, 1, fp);

is usually better.  It's checkable without reference to the variable's
declaration and can even be made into a macro

  #define write_var(v, f) fwrite(&v, sizeof v, 1, f)

if that sort of thing is the sort of thing you like.
