This is not a good way to write it. Lots of posters are either
perpetuating the bug or saying "it's fine" when it isn't.
What's more, post-decrementing ptr introduces a subtle bug once the main
one (not being able to use the whole buffer) is fixed.
This is a C group -- we should try to post good C. There have been
correct versions posted (at least I think they were fine) but this one
isn't.
