As a great Stephenson fan, I have to ask, aren't you getting your
cyberpunks mixed up?  That kind of virtual space hacking was the
central concept of William Gibson's 1984 'Neuromancer'. Both of
Sephenson's novels are very different.

[ Nod to r.a.tv: Wikipedia says there's a tv series based on
[ Neuromancer due to premiere in January.
