Yes, that's not a lot of data and there is very little advantage (and some disadvantages) to saving it as a binary bit-image. However, for some applications, it's important that the number read back is exactly the number written saved, and for floating point numbers that's often a bit fiddly to do using decimal (%f). Modern C has the %a format that prints a floating point number using hex so that when the internal format is binary (as it almost always is) you will get back exactly the number you wrote. -- Ben.
