You had to sleep someplace anyway--you may as well get two things done at once. The US train system (Amtrak) has always sucked and is about as bad now as it has always been, but recently it has had an upsurge in popularity. That's because flying has gotten so much worse (security crap etc.) that the trains are now at a relative advantage. Amtrak management recognizes what is going on and are very much resisting the TSA attempts to put airport-like measures into train stations.
