You are running big kitchen-sink distros and then complaining that they
don't run on small computers.  If you want something small, try Debian
and (if you want graphics) XFCE.  I run Debian just fine (with no window
system) on a 32 meg virtual server.  There are also embedded distros
like Angstrom (www.angstrom-distribution.org) but that's probably too
minimal for a desktop system.

Of course if you want to go all-out Forth, there is forthos.org ...
