That's actually an unreasonable assumption, at least in this context.
We're talking about taking what used to be a single variable, and
splitting it into to different variables, named to reflect the different
meanings of the values stored in them. The very last use of the first
variable precedes the first use of the second variable, so I would
expect any decently optimizing compiler to at least consider allocating
them in the same location (unless you added code that checks their
addresses, in which case it might be forced to give them different
locations). In other words, the generated code would be almost exactly
the same - but the source code would be a lot clearer, by reason of
clearly distinguishing the different meanings of the quantities stored
in the variable.
