There were reports after the 10.8.5 "supplemental update" of 
problems.

In view of that, I've stayed with the "non supplemental" 
10.8.5 "Combo" update, and everything runs fine.

I've fooled with Mavericks on an external drive, don't see 
any reason to "go there" at the present time...
