Not sure what your personal reasons are, but excluding significant bug fixes and improvements over some bad stuff introduced in 10.9, there is very little difference in functionality between 10.8 and 10.9. If you like 10.8, you will almost surely like 10.9 even more. (Also, just a note: While I and others here will know what you mean, you may want to be careful calling it "OSX 9", as it may confuse some people into thinking you are perhaps talking about classic Mac OS 9, or perhaps that you are simply confused yourself as to which version you are talking about. The proper version number for Mac OS X Mountain Lion is "10.9".) > I can always do it at a later point. I wanted to upgrade to the > latest version of OSX 8.x prior to the release of 9. It's possible you were just confused. As you may have noticed, when you choose Apple menu > Software Update, the App Store application is launched. This is because Software Update is now combined with the App Store, and is available in the "Updates" section. What should happen when you choose Software Update from the Apple menu is the App Store application should launch, and the Updates section should be displayed. It then take a moment while the app checks with Apple's servers to see which updates are available. Perhaps while that was happening, you clicked into one of the other App Store sections and saw the 10.9 banner offering 10.9 for free, and assumed that was the update that was available? If you are running 10.8, and you look at the Updates section of the App Store application, you should eventually see all of the available updates for 10.8. > I did try to install it and > got an error message. Like I said, 10.9 improves lots of bad things that were introduced in 10.8. It's a recommended upgrade. > I then went into the Apple site but was unable to find an update to > either 8.4 or 8.5. When I go to this page, I see all available updates for 10.8: <http://support.apple.com/downloads/#osxmountainlion> Here's a screen shot of what I see: <http://jollyroger.kicks-ass.org/apple_mountainlion_updates.png> > Frankly, I love Snow Leopard and would have been delighted to stay with > it. It's a bit rough around the edges as of late. But even so, it's not all bad. And I found that a lot of the third-party apps I used to use back in 10.6 were fairly easily replaced with alternative ones that are in many cases more powerful anyway. There's no reason you can't stay with 10.6 indefinitely. The market for older Macs is huge. So you can find any number of older models capable of running 10.6 quite easily if that's what you want. Just keep in mind the world doesn't stand still. 10.6 will become more and more obsolete as time marches on. -- E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
