When I learned the word, I was told "Indian" men were called braves, women were called squaws, and children were called papooses. (Of course those meanings have pretty much disappeared.). Carriers had nothing to do with it, and I don't think I'd ever heard the "carrier" meaning till this thread. However, I haven't talked much with people about infant carriers.
