Just to get that right, I didn't say that we should change the promotions rules to what I described. I am very well aware of the difficulties that this would introduce. I just wanted to point out where the conceptual difficulty is. If you like it or not, the argument promotion rules for functions without prototypes are a mis-design. The only point where they nowadays still are relevant are functions with variable argument lists. And changing these argument promotion rules would only be practically relevant for this class of functions, unfortunately a bunch of standard functions among them. For other functions, with a fixed number of arguments, nowadays anybody serious should use prototypes so default argument promotion doesn't apply. Jens
