I have found no fewer than 20 significant errors in Apple's maps within
a 10-mile radius of my home. Shopping center identified as a medical
center, medical center missing entirely, veterinary hospital identified
as a beer joint, mall stores erroneously labeled, hotel two miles from
its actual location, a phantom Subway sandwich shop where none exists,
a restaurant a mile from its actual location and on the wrong street,
an Interstate highway mislabeled as a local bypass... It goes on and
on, and I see that 20 is too small a number to describe the errors
within 10 miles of me. Google maps has all of these places right. Do
you suppose my little neighborhood is unique in some way, or do you
suppose that you could move about the country in 10-mile steps and find
about the same number of significant errors at each stop?

Now, if that's your idea of me just loving to complain about Apple as I
sit at one of my five Macs, so be it. But if I am to trust a map, it
has to have proved itself accurate. Apple's maps are useless to me.

Apple's maps are no longer new. I have used the error reporting system
repeatedly, to no avail. So I have abandoned Apple maps and I rely on
Google maps because they /are/ reliable. And yes, I think that Apple
should abandon its maps, apologize to Google, and reintegrate Google
maps into iOS.

I have explored the Empty Quarter and the Nubian Desert, the back
streets of Cairo and Shanghai and Sana'a and Umm Durman, and I know
about the desirability of reliable maps.

Bingo. With Apple maps already installed on iOS devices, why do you
suppose Google maps is so popular?

All the integration in the world is no good so long as a chain is only
as strong as its weakest link. The Apple maps app won't get you /or/
your dog to a medical center in my area. That makes it worse than
useless.
