Historical novels, if well researched, can convey information in a way that is detailed, immediate and direct, sometimes better than a scholarly tome on the same subject. Patrick O'Brian's books and those of Bernard Cornwall are in that manner. Georgette Heyer's novel of Waterloo, "An Infamous Army" is required reading at Sandhurst, the British military academy. I doubt Joe reads much of anything, however. He dismisses literature as "fantasy" and yet accepts the bible as real.
