Henry, you did not specify in your original problem statement whether the geared wheel runs along the INSIDE or the OUTSIDE of the circle. It makes a big difference whether the REVOLUTIONS around the center of the circle are in the SAME or OPPOSITE sense as the ROTATIONS of the geared wheel. There is no single correct answer. Either 99 or 101 are correct, depending on how you or Poutnik or Odd or rotchm visualized the problem. In the case of the figure 8, the revolutions add up to zero. In the idealized case of no slippage, this would be regardless of the relative sizes of the top and bottom of the figure 8. In the case of a REAL geared system, if one of the loops is too small, the geared wheel may derail as it tries to cross the small loop. Or if the loop is smaller in diameter than the distance between the teeth, the geared wheel may just do a "kerchunk" as it crosses the irregularity without otherwise noticing. But of course, for the purposes of this problem, we would be considering the idealized case. :-)
