In Cygwin, all input and output on console descriptors passes through a software layer which: - simulates a POSIX TTY device: tcgetattr, tcsetattr, ... - interprets ANSI/VT100 escape sequences, converting them into Console API calls, on both input and output. This means that POSIX code which controls the terminal with termios, and/or which uses hard-coded ANSI escape sequences will work. The MSVCRT.DLL printf will not do anything like this for you.
