Some people using C are also interested in C alternatives, but for whatever pragmatic reasons are using C anyway. I would form a plan, identify the roadblocks in it and work on removing them one by one. Changing C is a procedure, a task. Every task has a finite number of steps. First you have to figure out what they are. You might start with the wrong ones. Once you are on the right track though, it's just a matter of taking the first step, then the second and so on. (If the change idea is unreasonable, though, there will likely be an impassable roadblock. These projects have their reasons though. They are real things in the real world. You can download them from a repo, build them, and run a test suite. You can join a mailing list, web forum or IRC channel or whatever and meet others users.
