Sure, there are some things where I think that we could do with a
tighter specification, e.g., standardize on 2s-complement arithmentic
with wraparound on overflow.  The Forth-94 committee apparently wanted
to keep the option open for implementing Forthon ones-complement and
sign-magnitude hardware, and so did not standardize 2s-complement.  In
the meantime nobody has made a Forth-200x proposal on changing that,
and who knows what resistance we might see for such a proposal.

In any case, some things have not been specified tightly, for various
reasons.  If you wish for a thighter specification of something, make
a concrete proposal, and you will learn about the reasons, and whether
they still outweigh the benefits of a tighter specification.

But the case of a program running on one system and crashing on
another one could be for any reason, including those that you accept.

Sure I am: It shows that we won't get write-once run-anywhere (in the
Java sense) in Forth (although I have good experiences with the
portability of Forth programs across platforms, including different
cell sizes and byte orders).
