Note that those divisions are a special case for which you could use
*ptr = '0' + number & 1;
number >>= 1;
Though
(1) today's architectures are so optimized there's every chance doing
the division would be just as fast as doing the bit operations
(2) if the bit operations are actually faster, there's every chance the
compiler would optimize away the divisions anyway.
