IMO, if a person born in the English-speaking world requires
"(Pronounced nnnnn") behind their written name for other English
speakers, their parents did them a disservice. Having to explain to a
Chinese or Azerbaijani how "Warren" is pronounced is a different
matter.

If such a name is a jingoistic political statement about being Scots or
Welsh or Irish or anything English, I have bad news. Genetic evidence
is that the ancestors of the vast majority of peoples living in the
British Isles came from the Iberian Peninsula about 16,000 YBP and
spoke a language related to Basque (Stephen Oppenheimer, medical
geneticist, University of Oxford. See "The Origins of the British: A
Genetic Detective Story," Carroll & Graf, 2006). Celts, Romans, Angles,
Saxons, Vikings, Normans, and other invaders added very little to the
gene pool; there just weren't that many of them. IOW, the people of the
British Isles are genetically quite homogeneous. Bad luck for my
Scottish friends who named their son Ruaridh, knowing that no English
speaker anywhere could pronounce it correctly, what?
