Some modern car systems need to be manually updated with (for example) a USB stick, while others can update automatically "over the air", (e.g. Tesla) usually via a mobile phone or wi-fi internet connection, but other ways are sometimes used (for example, our Sky TV box updates itself via the satelitte dish since it is not connected to any internet network).
