When you deal with people in business who are not part of your organisation and are possibly in different time zones you need a method of communication that can be attended to not immediately, keeps a sortable record of what is sent and received, can have documents attached, uses common standards (ie not some proprietary protocol) because you don’t know what the other end is using, etc.
