#45541 — Tesco mobile - what is with the high prices?

FromDavid <wibble@btinternet.com>

SubjectTesco mobile - what is with the high prices?
Message-ID<lv84o3Fhne0U2@mid.individual.net>
I've been with Tesco Mobile pay monthly for years and years, for my main
number.

I have a 2nd SIM in my phone, and a SIM in my tablet.
ID mobile and Talkmobile.

They both give (IIRC) 50 GB data for under £10 per month.

Tesco (just looked at their web site) seem to offer as their cheapest deal
2 GB per month for £10.
They don't seem to go as high as 50 GB per month, but top out at an
unlimited deal.

Am I missing something?
These deals look so uncompetitive that I'm surprised they sell against the
opposition.

Now wondering if they negotiate to retain an account.

Cheers

They probably want out of the market as they don't get much value out of
it.

A year ago they signed a deal renewing their 50:50 partnership with VMO2
for another ten years.
All operators are desperately trying to wring more money out of their
customers at the moment. Operating costs (energy, wages) have gone up.
Capital investment costs have risen with the rise in borrowing rates. They
used to make money by attracting new customers in a growing market. But now
everyone who ever wants a mobile now has one so it’s now a mature market.

Perhaps also with people (reportedly) dumping landlines there is an
additional market for internet use via a mobile. And if that usage
requires unlimited or high-usage GB perhaps there's some profit to be had.

That’s a difficult market. People who use the mobile network as a landline
replacement are your most resource consuming customers. Get too many of
those and your local cell site starts to saturate. That’s why there’s such
a price jump to get an unlimited plan. The networks rely on people with
limited Gb plans actually not using most of their allowance each month.

I assume their market is older and/or non technical people who are
reassured by the brand, want to deal with human beings at their
Tesco stores, and (initially anyway) want voice and texts. People
like my brother - which I why I sent him there to buy a 4g phone
and a 'lite' plan. They set it all up for him.

(I'm now trying to persuade him to carry it with him.)

If he doesn't want to be tied to the damned thing all the time, don't
badger him! We are few enough as it is.

You can get 50GB for £10 if you go direct to O2

<https://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/compare/sim_only_deals/>

Click the options if you want a specific network, or prioritise prive vs
amount of data ...

Thanks.
Interesting.
The only downside is the price rises every year, starting this April.

Plenty of deals for the O2 network in general.
I try to keep SIMs on different networks to increase the coverage around
the country.

Cheers

Very odd, only if you go "direct to O2" via the uSwitch link. Just go to
O2 and you are not offered anything like that.

Seems to be standard practice these days. Spusu also offer better deals if
you get to their site via a switching site.

It's been like this for many years.
